You Are 56% Texas

At first, you seem Texan... but just because a chicken has wings don't mean it can fly.

In other news, I have apparently acclimated to Indiana... It was 48 degrees today and I wasn't cold.

So angry!! [Feb. 2nd, 2007|09:59 pm]

I was pretty shocked to read this today:

"Texas governor orders STD vaccine for all girl:
Decision comes after maker of cervical cancer shot doubled lobbying efforts"

Now, I'm all for vaccines for diseases that cause cancer... but to make it mandatory?!

First of all, put sex aside. That is not even the most important issue that we should be addressing here. (Although I was sure it was the issue that would keep TX from requiring this!! Where is the fundamentalist right when I finally want them?)

1. Who made this vaccine? Merck.

2. What other drugs has Merck made recently? Vioxx, anyone? Remember that?

3. How extensively has this drug been tested? Only for 5 years on WOMEN. Not on the 11-12 year old girls who the Governor is recommending are required to be vaccinated. No studies on the long term effects of this vaccine. What's more, the tests used a placebo that is known to skew the results, making the vaccine appear safer than it actually is. "The FDA allowed Merck to use a potentially reactive aluminum containing placebo as a control for most trial participants, rather than a non-reactive saline solution placebo.[1] A reactive placebo can artificially increase the appearance of safety of an experimental drug or vaccine in a clinical trial." (http://www.nvic.org/PressReleases/pr62706gardasil.htm)

How can the government REQUIRE this vaccine when there are few tests to prove its effectiveness or its safety? Making it available would be great, but requiring it is making every girl whose parents don't opt out a guinea pig. (And not every parent is going to be really informed or realize the potential danger of this vaccine...)
Other vaccinations have already had a major effect on children's health-- some vaccines contained mercury, which is linked to autism. Since so many vaccinations have become required, the rate of autism has increased alot: "Today, the Centers for Disease Control admits that one American child in 166 has been diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder.1 In 1970, autism affected four in 10,000 children.2 By 1991, 5,000 autistic children were in the public school system; by 2001, that number had grown to 94,000" (http://www.mothering.com/articles/growing_child/vaccines/wake.html)

4. HPV is not even a disease that is casually spread. There aren't going to be people spreading HPV to each other in schools or other crowded public places (I hope!). There is absolutely no reason to make this a required vaccination.

5. Finally, look who's pushing for this requirement... Who's going to be cashing in the $360 per vacc. check? Merck. Government is so lame. I was just complaining to my dad today how inefficient and unorganized the government is. He laughed and said that that was probably a good thing, as it kept them from doing too much damage. Obviously not true in this case. :(

"Merck is bankrolling efforts to pass state laws across the country mandating Gardasil for girls as young as 11 or 12. It doubled its lobbying budget in Texas and has funneled money through Women in Government, an advocacy group made up of female state legislators around the country." (http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/16948093/wid/11915773?GT1=9033)

Anyone know what this "Women in Government" group is? If they're supposed to be acting in the best interests of women, they're sucking at it. Seriously, a choice between possibly contracting HPV, which only might lead to cancer (and only if I have sex), or being a guinea pig for a vaccine with who-knows-what-kinds of long term effects.... I'd choose the former. But then, that's exactly what it is, right? A choice? Shouldn't Americans be free to choose what is in the best interests for their health? Come on, Texas. Quit being so stupid.

Gah. There you go. Off my soapbox.
